During the war, Arina is left without a husband, and her two sons die. She and her nine-year-old daughter, Khavrosha, eke out a miserable existence until Sister Varvara appears on the doorstep, passing through to the monastery. From her, Khavrosha learns that the masters spare no expense on Christmas trees and devise a plan. Risking her life, Khavrosha earns money for food and changes Varvara's mind.
