French entrepreneur Jean-Pierre Alibert arrived in Russia in the mid-19th century at the age of 17 and soon managed to organize the largest graphite mining operation in Siberia, creating a cutting-edge enterprise at the time. Alibert's Siberian graphite won gold medals at the World Exhibitions in Paris in 1867 and 1889.
