Early in the morning, young Varvara wakes up in a sand quarry, chained to an iron carriage. It later transpires that she is not the only victim. On the other side of the wagon, also chained is the exhausted Semyon, who has been there for three days. All attempts to free himself fail and lead to a desperate act for freedom.
